By the early 1860's Monet was a
young and ambitious French
painter living in Paris
with an ever widening circle of
young artist colleagues.
The influence of abstract expressionism on Eggleston, partly through his friendship
with the
painter Tom
Young, is addressed at points throughout the show, and it is important to recognise that perspectival lines, the balance of colour throughout a composition, and the presence of contextual details such as logos and pavements, are as important as the features, dress and celebrity identity of the subjects.
He came into prominence
with the artists known as the «Transavantguardia», a group defined by Achille Bonita Oliva in 1979, which included seven
young Italian
painters: Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino, along
with Nicola De Maria, Luigi Ontani and Ernesto Tatafiori.
Roberta Smith, a famous art critic, placed Guyton
with some
younger painters that were countering the structures of late Modernism by revisiting the early Modernist cusp between abstraction and representation, entering the area previously populated
with Malevich «s robotlike peasants, Jawlensky's masks, Mondrian's flower paintings.
Now, at age 73, that is rapidly changing — her dreamlike, unfussy portrayals of ships aglow on night seas, cave - painting - ready divers, and an existential Superman launching himself through monochrome skies have hit the moment
with uncanny precision, seeming distinctly fresh and relevant amid the work of
painters half a century
younger.
Here's what did work: Glenn Kaino's glittering mass of arrows in flight at Honor Fraser's booth, a demure suite of gelatin silver prints showing Carrie Mae Weems dancing in a nearly transparent white nightgown, Galerie Brandstrup's laser - focus on
young painters (including Michael Kvium and Christer Glein), and Chris Wiley's quirky photographs mimicking and framed
with quotidian substances (never has Astro - Turf served a better purpose than a picture frame) as part of Nicelle Beauchene Gallery's entry into Armory Presents.
A former binge drinker who used to play poker for income, Mr. Grotjahn has settled down
with his wife, the
painter Jennifer Guidi, and their two
young girls (though he still frequently posts quirky — sometimes racy — images on Instagram, where he has nearly 25,000 followers).
