At Los Islotes — a steep craggy seamount leaping straight from the sea — observe a sea lion colony from the boat and skiff, or slip into a wetsuit for an early morning snorkel with curious, agile
young sea lion pups.
Though the marine mammals were captured from the wild in the early years of the program, since the late 1980s, the program has bred its dolphins in - house at its training facility in San Diego and buys
young sea lion pups from marine parks, said Mark Xitco, who heads up all the marine mammal training and care for the program.

I talked with some
sea lions too who told me about two
young male
sea lion pups who were rescued after being found stranded, malnourished and underweight.
The
sea lions here said the
young pups are excited to be at Georgia Aquarium because they're treated like kings (they're
sea lions, after all!).
As nursing
sea lion mothers travel farther from their
pups to find food, these
young sea lions are unable to fend for themselves and wash ashore due to starvation.
Over the coming months, as seals and
sea lions haul out on beaches and give birth to
pups up and down the California coast, the Marine Mammal Center is looking for volunteers to care for a likely onslaught of
young animals that need help.
But
sea lion mothers are having trouble finding enough food to sustain themselves and the
pups they are nursing, so many of these
young animals are left starving on the islands for days at a time.
Despite multiple attempts by marine mammal centers to rehabilitate these
young sea lions for release back into the wild, many
pups continue to wash ashore and are deemed non-releasable by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Fisheries).
