The calm, warm waters of the lagoon are a safe place
for young whales, free from predators like killer whales.
Some whale researchers
believe younger whales and first time mothers may lack the knowledge and experience to take the safer route along the coastline.
Surprisingly, these dialects are not linked to geography per se, with
most young whales «conforming» and choosing to perform codas used by their families or social group, says Mauricio Cantor, one of the study's authors on CBC:
To record their sounds, scientists placed temporary tagging devices on eight humpback whale mothers and calves in the Exmouth Gulf off Western Australia, where
the young whales spend months suckling to gain enough weight for their annual migrations to the Antarctic or Arctic.
Chilly as it sounds, staying in cold waters year - round may be less energetically taxing for
a young whale than migrating north to warmer waters.
This young whale was named for his roughed - up appearance after scientists found him badly ensnared in fishing gear in early 2008, when he was just 4 years old.
If the Orcas are able to separate them, then they have a better chance of drowning
the young whale.»
On the scene, rescuers discovered that
the young whale was entangled in two sets of commercial crab pot gear.
The calm waters framed by Fraser Island make for perfect conditions to stay a while and raise
the young whales.
The researchers can use the image to monitor the growth of
the young whales, and some of the photos suggest that some of the female whales are pregnant, more good news for this small population.
