Diabetes management

and adolescence places substantial burdens on the
youth and family, necessitating ongoing assessment of psychosocial status
and diabetes distress
during routine diabetes visits (10 — 12).
A growing body of evidence suggests that stressors associated with war - related events may predispose
youth to adverse outcomes.10 - 17 This stream of research is consistent with
family systems theory, which suggests that the experiences of a military - connected parent will affect the functioning of
youth in that
family system.18 Although some studies have considered the impact of military life
during wartime, 12,17,19 to our knowledge, most researchers have examined negative outcomes associated specifically with deployments.1, 7,20 These studies have examined the psychosocial functioning of children
during the deployment of a parent4, 14 or following 1 or multiple deployments.11, 13,21 Although many military - connected
youth fare relatively well despite stressors, these studies concluded that a sizeable proportion appears to struggle with experiences of deployment
and other war - related stressors.
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders
during childhood
and adolescence, with a prevalence of 3 — 5 % in school - age children (6 — 12 years)
and 10 — 19 % in adolescents (13 — 18 years); 1, 2
and the prevalence of anxiety disorders in this population tends to increase over time.3 Anxiety is the most common psychological symptom reported by children

and adolescents often occur with a number of comorbidities, such as autism spectrum disorders, 6 depressive disorders, 7 conduct disorder, 8 substance abuse9 or suicide - related behaviour.10
Youths with anxiety disorders experience serious impairment in social functioning (eg, poor school achievement; relational problems with
family members
and peers).11, 12 Childhood
and adolescent anxiety disorders can persist despite treatment, 1
and they are associated with later adult psychopathology.13, 14
With longitudinal data from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care
and Youth Development (n = 1,298), first - difference models reveal that
family structure transitions are associated with changes in the type
and quantity of early care as well as the number of care arrangements used, especially
during the latter part of infancy.
