The aforementioned research group demonstrated that the expulsion of
zooxanthellae at 27 °C (non-thermal stress conditions) is part of a regulatory mechanism that maintains zooxanthellal
density and a stable carbon concentration with expulsion of digested or normal forms of symbionts.
