Some groups consider conception is the
fertilization of the ovum / egg into a
zygote during the first day or two after insemination.
These resultant haploid cells can fuse with other haploid cells of the opposite sex or mating type
during fertilization to create a new diploid cell, or
zygote.
Soon after the egg and sperm join
during fertilization, the resultant
zygote (fertilized egg cell) starts undergoing cell division.
Sperm cells can not divide and have a limited life span, but after fusion with egg cells
during fertilization, a totipotent
zygote is formed with the potential to develop into a new organism.
