The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland located deep within the brain, behind and between the eyes. It is part of the limbic system which also includes the amygdalae and hippocampus. The pineal gland produces melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles, and it may also play a role in other functions such as circadian rhythms, mood regulation, and neuroprotection. In some cultures, the pineal gland is considered to be the "third eye" or the seat of spiritual insight.
