Definition of «subunit»

A subunit is a smaller part or component that forms an essential but non-autonomous element within a larger system. In biology, for example, a subunit can refer to one of several protein molecules that combine to form a functional enzyme complex. Similarly, in military organization, a subunit may represent a smaller group within a larger unit or formation. The term "subunit" is also used in psychology to describe the smallest meaningful units of behavioral data.
