"Instant runoff" is a voting system where voters rank their preferences. If no candidate gets a majority of votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated. Then, the second choice votes of those who voted for the eliminated candidate are counted. This process continues until a candidate receives a majority of the votes.
