have a completely open - world map, with regions that are themed like worlds in new super mario bros. scatter power stars around the world to find by beating bosses or completeng platforming challenges, maybe put some sort of gates or barriers in the world, either to optional bonus areas or required to beat the game, that require a certain number of power stars to open them.
