Although Romero generally claimed to be a Ford / Hawks / Welles type of cinephile and didn't often mention Cassavetes or Bergman as favourite directors, if at all, that's how a lot of this film plays — as an intriguing combination of the former's downbeat cinéma vérité style and the latter's more artfully - composed 1960s chamber pieces.
