Hutchinson - Gilford progeria is caused by a spontaneous mutation during conception in a gene called LMNA, which encodes a protein called prelamin A. Progeria patients experience a buildup of an abnormal version of prelamin A in their cells that, among other changes, distorts the nucleus and alters gene expression. (sciencemag.org)
This gene, along with a number of other genes encoding proteins involved in nickel homeostasis, has been acquired a long time ago by the bacterium via horizontal gene transfer. (sciencedaily.com)
The base was located in the TDPB gene, which encodes a protein called TDP - 43 whose function isn't clear. (sciencemag.org)
