Matt, Even on the punctuated equilibrium version of speciation, it takes on the order of tens of tousands of years for an isolated group to diverge from the «parent» species enough to be considered a separate species, and even then they won't necessarily look DRAMATICALLY different even in life, let alone in the fossil record.
