Other telescopes operating at different wavelengths could attempt to reveal the planet's exact orbit and size as well as its bulk composition and surface temperature.
Astronomers have used ESO's HARPS planet hunter in Chile, along
with other telescopes around the world, to discover three planets orbiting stars in the cluster Messier 67.
More observations
from other telescopes around the world suggest the object's trajectory is at an unusually steep angle to the plane on which all the planets lie, and it does not orbit the sun.
But LIGO, with two instruments in Livingston, Louisiana, and Hanford, Washington, can not pinpoint the sources of the waves, which would let astronomers train
other telescopes on them.
Astronomers using the TRAPPIST - South telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory, the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal and the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, as well as
other telescopes around the world [1], have now confirmed the existence of at least seven small planets orbiting the cool red dwarf star TRAPPIST - 1 [2].
Using observations from Chandra and a number
of other telescopes from around the world, it was found that the phenomenon led to the creation of a galactic particle accelerator, which could explain previously inexplicable swirling structures seen in radio data.
By tracking the motion of stars orbiting close to Sgr A *, a team of German and Czech astronomers have analyzed 20 years of observations made by the VLT and
other telescopes using a new technique that pinpoints the positions of these stars.
Because star dimming can also take place through other means (for example, another star slightly grazing the surface), in the early days these planets were confirmed
through other telescopes, generally by measuring the gravitational «wobble» the planet has on the star.
The new results from SPHERE, along with data from
other telescopes such as ALMA, are revolutionising astronomers» understanding of the environments around young stars and the complex mechanisms of planetary formation.
A third LIGO detector will allow researchers to triangulate gravitational wave sources and
train other telescopes on the same part of the sky to learn more.
The data collected by Spitzer and
other telescopes reveal the exoplanets» sizes and distances to their stars, while theoretical models predict additional information about the planets» atmospheres and surfaces.
The telescope will act as a finder telescope, searching for objects that are interesting,
which other telescopes might zoom in on.
Scientists quickly
focused other telescopes on the event, including the X-ray telescope aboard NASA's Swift satellite, an orbiting spacecraft that scans the sky for bursts of extremely high energy.
But Standish points out that most of the irregular observations came from a single telescope, whereas observations made by two
other telescopes during the same period did not show the same residual.
Other telescopes designed to detect high - energy wavelengths, such as x-rays, need considerable distance between their mirrors and x-ray detectors and therefore must be built at large scales — an expensive venture in terms of construction and launch.
Automated systems will also be needed to spot fast - changing objects in the sky and
alert other telescopes to home in on them quickly for more detailed study, similar to the existing system for studying gamma ray bursts.
Though other telescopes have provided evidence that dark matter actually exists, LSST will be able to map it precisely by rapidly scanning the heavens for gravitational distortions that only dark matter can explain.
Other telescopes later measured the spectrum of the afterglow, revealing that the burst detonated about 13.1 billion light years from Earth.
A wisp of cosmic radio waves, emitted before our solar system was born, shows that a new radio telescope will be able to detect
galaxies other telescopes can't.
The observatory's information will be beamed back to the ground
where other telescopes can look for small tugs or wobbles in the star's position, which would confirm a planet has been discovered.
Cappelluti and his colleagues compared the strength of the X-rays from the Milky Way's halo to X-rays that
other telescopes saw coming from the center of our galaxy.
I've been here since Cycle 6 and now we're ramping up for Cycle 24, so the list of observers I claim as mine is pretty long, and I feel very protective of them and their observations, even if they've moved on to other program coordinators or
even other telescopes.
The mission will rely on observations
by other telescopes, both on the ground and in space, to confirm which of its detected «candidates» are bona fide planets.
Decin says other red giant stars probably puff out dust in shells too, but are too far away
for other telescopes to have detected the shells.
The scientists then mapped the quasars
with other telescopes and at wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to far infrared.
«The game to see the light from these catastrophic mergers is on,» says Mansi Kasliwal, assistant professor of astronomy and the leader of the Caltech effort to search for electromagnetic emission from gravitational waves using the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory, a robotic survey for astrophysical transients (brief, intense flashes of light), and a network
of other telescopes.
Additionally, if we ask our visitors to look at an illuminated screen for, say, 15 or 20 minutes while we discuss various objects on the screen, even turning the display to low intensity levels would be enough to severely impact their dark - adaptation and would potentially ruin their views of objects
through other telescopes.
This image contains the most distant galaxy cluster, called «CL J1001» — a discovery made using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and
several other telescopes.
In the majority of cases, the ALMA observations alone could pinpoint the distances, but for a few galaxies the team combined the ALMA data with measurements
from other telescopes such as the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) and the ESO Very Large Telescope.
Pinpointing the sources of gravitational waves will allow astronomers to
point other telescopes their way, boosting the chances of learning more about them via x-rays, gamma - rays, radio waves, neutrinos and more.
New images from ESO's Very Large Telescope in Chile and
other telescopes reveal a rich landscape of stars and glowing clouds of gas in one of our closest neighbouring galaxies, the Small Magellanic Cloud.
Tie is now turning the focus of this study to follow - up observations with JCMT (e.g. POL - 2) as well as
many other telescopes (e.g., ALMA, SMA, NRO 45 - m, KVN, FAST 500m...).
Additional observations and archival data from
other telescopes confirmed the on - again, off - again cycle of X-ray and radio pulsations.
TESS» mission is to find planets around some of the nearest and brightest stars, and
other telescopes on Earth will then study those planets to understand them better.
Other telescopes around the world soon confirmed that it was a type Ia supernova, one of the brightest events of the cosmos.
More powerful and sensitive than the Hubble and
other telescopes that came before it, the JWST can surely give us a selfie of our galaxy like we've never seen before.
Ladies, listen up: These space leggings come in a huge variety of designs, showing real images from Hubble and
other telescopes.
Traditional black hole seeds, on the other hand, which derive from dead stars, are likely to be too faint for the JWST or
other telescopes to see.
