In reaction, a bunch
of icy asteroids shot into the inner solar system, pummeling early Earth and bringing it water, as shown in this animation.
The Grand Tack nicely explains the formation of Mars, the layout of the asteroid belt and the delivery of water to Earth
via icy asteroids.
There may also be ways to sequester and protect some of a planet's water — probably delivered
by icy asteroids (SN: 5/16/15, p. 18)-- during those first billion years.
The same planetary tango that robbed Mars of resources might also explain
how icy asteroids pummeled Earth.
Explosive, indestructible, and projectile -
ricocheting icy asteroids will slam against your ship, or can be weaponized against or by your opponents.
Two «clouds»
of icy asteroids 60 ° ahead and behind Jupiter (and at or near Jupiter's orbital distance from the sun) are called «Jupiter Trojans» (diagram), while two similar objects in Mars orbit are called «Martian Trojans.»
[2] Current research indicates that water came to Earth not via comets, as long thought, but
via icy asteroids.
In 2002, astrophysicists spotted a strange tail on asteroid 133P Elst Pizaro, the result of
the icy asteroid turning to water vapor.
Some of it is sublimation:
an icy asteroid transforming directly into water vapor as it makes its way toward the sun.
The ring system around
the icy asteroid Chariklo is the first found encircling anything in our solar system other than a gas giant.
«The building blocks that went into making our oceans are
the icy asteroids and comets,» said Torrence Johnson of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif, who presented the results Oct. 7 at the American Astronomical Society Division of Planetary Sciences meeting in Denver.
This study, based on W. M. Keck Observatory data and photometric observations from telescopes throughout the world, suggests that the asteroid and its moon are products of the collision of two
icy asteroids.

icy asteroids will slam against your ship, or can be weaponized against your opponents.
