In an ideal world (similar, in some ways, to the one Janet Poppendieck envisions in Free for All: Fixing School Food in America) kids would get the food education they sorely need, while campuses would be closed to
require participation in the school meal program (unless a lunch is brought from home).
SNA also regularly provides summary reports on current policies across the United States including mandates
for participation in school meal programs, if a state provides an additional funding and the form it takes, and if a state implements additional nutritional standards outside those set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Jessica Shelly, food service director for the Cincinnati Public Schools, said that one of the district's goals was to
increase participation in its school meals program, and that participation increased from 48 percent to 69 percent when a greater variety of food was offered as a part of the meal.
