These were lessons that I learned very early on when working on the thermal design for an instrument going on the
Japanese solar observation satellite, Solar - B.
We note that our conclusions can not be tested on the basis of the last 30 years
of solar observations because, according to the proxy data, the Sun was in a maximum plateau state in its long - term evolution.
The rocket placed IRIS into a sun - synchronous polar orbit that will allow it to make almost continuous
solar observations during its two - year mission.
My thoughts are that most recent advancements
in solar observation are non-visual and are not asociated with detecting more spots.
The graph [above], courtesy of the Sunspot Index and Long -
term Solar Observations webpage (SILSO), will give you an idea how little activity occurred in March.
Basic concepts of astronomy (atmospheric windows, position astronomy, magnitude systems)
Solar observation UV, optical and infrared astronomy:
(b) Observational study of space weather using the Solar Magnetic Activity Research Telescope (SMART) and the international ground -
based solar observation network (CHAIN).
In addition to its
direct solar observation, SOHO has enabled the discovery of large numbers of comets, mostly very tiny sungrazing comets which incinerate as they pass the Sun.
The period from 31 July 2009 till 31 August 2009 (SC23 - 24 transit) is one of the longer ones since the beginning of
daily solar observations in 1849.
We discuss the East Asian naked - eye sunspot observations, the
telescopic solar observations, the fraction of sunspot active days, the latitudinal extent of sunspot positions, auroral sightings at high latitudes, cosmogenic radionuclide data as well as solar eclipse observations for that period.
As you probably noticed, in order to reflect this new big step forward and the new scope of our World Data Center, we gave it a brand new name and logo: SILSO for «Sunspot Index and Long -
term Solar Observations».
It was not until 1976 that a paper published in Science by John A. Eddy of Saginaw Valley State University renewed interest in the sun - climate relationship with a comprehensive analysis of many different historical records
of solar observation.
SMEI is
another solar observation instrument that the university is responsible for.
Influenced by
the solar observations of the Italian astronomer, physicist, and philosopher Galileo Galilei in the early 17th century, Karen Tompkins creates abstracted paintings on insulation board that closely resemble these sunspot drawings.
Solar observations by the small explorer spacecraft IRIS, a NASA mission launched last June, reveal a wealth of violent eruptions at unprecedented resolution.
