of students from closing schools are transferred to receiving schools that are struggling just as much as or worse than the schools that closed.
At Jenner Academy of the Arts, slated to receive
students from a closing school where gang rivalry is a fear, teacher Tara Stamps says there are too many distractions to focus on evaluations.
Chicago researchers
tracked students from closed schools and found that most ended up in academically weak schools and, except for the few students attending high - scoring schools, were no better off academically one year later (de la Torre & Gwynne, 2009).
As for the schools that receive the transferring students, the study uncovered no adverse effects on students in existing schools due to the influx
of students from the closed schools.
