Because people are usually familiar with bladder infections, they often bring their straining cats in expecting them to be
treated with antibiotic therapy.
The most frustrating part of the c. difficile story to me is that research has shown that this infection is largely preventable with the appropriate use of certain probiotic strains if they are given in
conjunction with antibiotic therapy.
If needed, oral lactulose (0.1 - 0.5 mL / kg, PO, bid - tid)
along with antibiotic therapy, either neomycin (22 mg / kg, PO, bid) or metronidazole (7.5 mg / kg, PO, bid) are recommended.
Use them only as recommended by your qualified holistic vet, preceded and followed by a urine culture to make sure your treatment worked, just as you would
do with antibiotic therapy.
