For the top I used
Minwax wood conditioner and Minwax Dark Walnut stain and then some Annie Sloan Pure White chalk paint for the bottom.
I have a question,
the wood conditioner did you use oil based or water based?
Either way, take down a sample board... clean and degloss it... give it a light sanding... apply
some wood conditioner (helps keep the stain even across the surface) and let it dry for 15 minutes or so.
If you are going to stain the wood after stripping you may want to use
a wood conditioner first on the wood before staining.
After you sanded and applied
the wood conditioner the second time, it didn't seem like it turned out as orange - red as the first time and I'm wondering how / why??

We are going to put
a wood conditioner on the floor first, and then apply Minwax Dark Walnut Oil - based Stain.
First I went to Sherwin Williams with a sample (shelf) from the entertainment center and a piece of yellow pine and they custom made a stain color for me to match then I used
a wood conditioner (made by Minwax) before applying the stain which helped with the splotchiness.
