There are lots of saltwater crocodiles and the area provides an important conservation habitat
for dugongs, nesting turtles and migratory birds.
If you're lucky, you may spot dolphins and even
dugongs in the bay from where the boat leaves.
Unusual mammals that can be seen
include dugongs, which feed on the sea grass beds in the south of the park, and sperm whales, which travel through the area on their way to calve in the Sangihe Archipelago.
Sediment, which can travel long distances, will kill seagrass, exacerbating the decline in
dugong populations that feed on it.
You can join a wildlife eco cruise to see a range of birds, and you might also be lucky enough to
see dugongs and turtles.
Along with coral reefs, mangrove forests and salt - marshes, they play an important role in nutrient cycling, while also providing a refuge for crustaceans, juvenile fish and endangered species such
as dugongs, manatees and sea turtles.

grazing dugong, loggerhead turtles, colourful reef fish and corals, and even the rare grey nurse shark.
Moreton Bay Marine Park is the only place in the world where significant populations
of dugongs and turtles can still be found close to a major metropolitan centre.
The warm waters surrounding the island

dugongs while diving on the east side of Bunaken island.

find dugongs grazing along seaweed patches off Dugong Beach on Whitsunday Island, near Claireview in Mackay and further south in the protected waters of Pumicestone Passage in the Bribie Island Recreation Area.

Lucky visitors might catch a glimpse of an

Within the months of mid July till late November you will see the giants of the sea pass by on the western side of the island the humpback whales, will come out to play along with the range
of dugong that love these clear waters.
The Queensland Government acted decisively and for the first time turtles and
dugongs were afforded protection under the Queensland Animal Care and Protection Act — a move praised by Indigenous communities in North Queensland.
