That is why there were such feverish expectations in advance of last night's world premiere
of Mockingjay Part 1.

That commitment to the novels» adult subject — this is about loyalty as much as love, both national and individual —
makes Mockingjay Part 2 an ambitious conclusion to a quietly bold saga.
We talk about the major points of tension in the book, how Katniss's character has progressed in the series, and
where Mockingjay rates in terms of violence and romance.
The established roles of Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Effie (Elizabeth Banks) and even President Snow (Donald Sutherland) have also been reduced for «
Mockingjay Pt. 1», in favor of new cast members and other supporting players.
For all its obvious smarts and mildly provocative ideas,
Mockingjay doesn't seem to trust its audience quite as much as it clearly trusts its heroine.
It really is surreal to
see Mockingjay come to life and I am not sure my wee little heart can take it.
Just as surprising, perhaps, is how Jennifer holds her own with such seasoned actors as Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose final role was Plutarch Heavensbee in the two
Mockingjay movies.

Having said that, given the surprising quality of the Catching Fire adaptation, I'm keen to see how Francis Lawrence and co. treat the very heavy
Mockingjay story.
I love the Hunger Games series — both the books and the films — but even I kinda
gave Mockingjay, Part 1 some side - eye, because it really felt like the first part of a story, rather than a film in and of itself.
Mockingjay follows the recent trend of splitting lengthy source material like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.
The one constant has been Jennifer Lawrence's charismatic, committed performance as Katniss Everdeen,
aka Mockingjay.
Lawrence has seldom been more compelling as she plumbs both Katniss's vulnerability and her reluctant strength, and the «propo» device embodies what is both so strange and so strikingly effective
about Mockingjay: Part One's structure.
I'm not the biggest supporter of breaking
Mockingjay into two but it did allow for more detail, more clarity.
We found the colours a little overwrought in the opening scenes when
watching Mockingjay, for example, but the deep blacks and brilliant blues set up Gravity nicely.
And
while Mockingjay — Part 2 is the weakest entry in the series (certainly the dourest), it still manages to close the franchise well enough to warrant a trip to your local theater.
Just when you
thought Mockingjay was the final movie in the Hunger Games series, you are completely wrong.
It may not sound like scintillating conversation for an action blockbuster, but that is
precisely Mockingjay — Part 1's achievement: it turns a political struggle into something grippingly potent — and thrillingly personal.
Catching Fire hasn't even arrived in theaters, but that hasn't stopped Lionsgate from beginning to
cast Mockingjay, the final installment to the Hunger Games series.
Additionally, the Samsung
exclusive Mockingjay trailer will be available in select Best Buy stores this weekend.
