As a critical component to the health and
wellbeing of everyone in our school, mindfulness is taught, practiced and explored in many ways including guided breathing, yoga, walking, and reflection.
It is a balancing act and a challenge that requires innovative thinking and an appreciation for the many consequences of how and when to hold students strictly accountable for behavior that not only undercuts learning but can constitute a serious threat to the physical
safety of everyone in the school building.
School leaders make the greatest impact on the progress and achievement of learners by using their educational expertise and management skills to focus the
efforts of everyone in the school on improving the quality of teaching and learning.
By spreading social and emotional learning and restorative practices school - wide — and through courageous conversations that build the cultural
awareness of everyone in the school community — we can make our schools more caring, productive and equitable.
In the course of their research over the past decade, the authors have distilled five essential components for quality conversations around data: (1) Students are the shared
responsibility of everyone in the school, (2) conversations about data include a healthy level of disagreement, (3) conversations about data engender trust rather than suspicion, (4) data teams focus on a solution - oriented approach, and (5) data teams are broadly aware of what they're expected to accomplish.
But it's hard to know whether the perceptions of those few students match
those of everyone in the school.
