These scenarios represent a future with an increase
in radiative forcing of 4.5 or 8.5 watts / m2, respectively.
The human signal in temperature is that temperature that is there by human causation factors, such as induced by
increased radiative forcing.
A large class of climate forcings can be translated into a common currency, known
as radiative forcing.
Like the other metrics discussed above, global mean
radiative forcing at the surface would not allow characterization of the regional structure of forcing.
Putting it all together, Figure 2 compares the warming from human caused greenhouse gases to the
total radiative forcing from all human sources.
Global warming - Global warming refers to the increase, observed or projected, in global surface temperature, as one of the consequences of
radiative forcing caused by human - induced emissions.
The first column has the
net radiative forcing (warming or cooling tendency), and the other columns show the breakdown according to aerosol source.
The report not only compared the changes in
radiative forcing over the last 20 years, it also highlighted the quantities of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
The increased water vapor roughly doubles the
direct radiative forcing, giving the 1 — 2 % value, although this will vary from day to day.
Another limitation of the traditional
radiative forcing concept is that it does not adequately characterize the regional response.
This
negative radiative forcing competes with the greenhouse gas warming for determining the change in evaporation and precipitation.
Not all of these studies express the ocean heat content changes in terms of
average radiative forcing, although it is straightforward to do so.
And from there you work backwards and you get
radiative forcing which is the measure of how much heat imbalance is caused by these greenhouse gases and then from there you get actual policies.
This is called
surface radiative forcing, and the measurements are part of the empirical evidence that CO2 is causing the warming.
The new forcing estimate comes about from a newer understanding of the role of aerosols as well as the
additional radiative forcing from greenhouse gas emissions since 2005.
For the current climate, we calculate the reduction in wet deposition by
dust radiative forcing and find that the aerosol burden is increased only modestly.
The climate sensitivity value tells us how much the planet will warm or cool in response to a
given radiative forcing change.
