Although about 100 times as many asteroids as comets approach Earth, comets pack a bigger punch — they plunge toward the sun several times
faster than asteroids.
In our solar system it would have been way further out
than the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, where most meteorites come from.
Great so the Inspiration Mars Mission 2018 is out... But the Inspiration Venus / Mars Mission 2021 is in!!!! This is great news and clearly will generate much more public interest
than an Asteroid Mission which is just R&D for Planetary Resources, the company that will start mining asteroids... This is awesome
«It's really odd that the first object we would see from outside our system would be an asteroid, because a comet would be a lot easier to spot and the Solar System ejects many more
comets than asteroids,» says Jackson, who specializes in planet and solar system formation.
Those comets already range much farther from the plane of the
planets than asteroids do, and Jupiter's gravitational effects would drive their dust even farther afield.
Comets contain more
water than asteroids and have different solar orbits, but missions to both kinds of bodies face similar challenges.
In addition, the data show that the temperature of the innermost ring imaged by the vortex is around 100 Kelvin (or minus 173 Celsius degrees), a bit
warmer than our asteroid belt.
During its approach, Rosetta has trained its navcams and OSIRIS camera at the comet, which sent back dramatic pictures of Churyumov — Gerasimenko; revealing it to be craggier and sharper
edged than the asteroids and moons previously explored that had been worn down by billions of years of meteor impacts.
Its orbit places Vesta in the Main Asteriod Belt, but the object more closely resembles a small planet or Earth's
Moon than another asteroid (more discussion).
The announcement of an actor attached to the project, especially one that is so well know means that it is further along in
development than Asteroids, Joust, or Missile Command.
Greater uncertainty, I suppose, and more catastrophic
outcome than asteroid impact or any of the other scenarios that have been discussed.
Disrupting comets (white and red v's)
rather than asteroids (green) contribute most of the dust that makes up the zodiacal cloud (purple haze and inset).
It really made me feel like they just want to spend money on design and fabricate some test vehicles but not launch them because # 1 it to expensive and # 2 they really don't know where to go or
than an asteroid mission because Planetary Resources really doesn't want to spend their own money on R&D... Considering the events in the Ukraine and Iran... The world may end before the SLS / Orion goes anywhere other LEO or maybe just maybe to the Moon!!!
It may be little more
than an asteroid — just two - billionths of the mass of our planet, with no atmosphere and hardly any gravity — yet the largest of Mars's two moons is poised to become our next outpost in space, our second home.
