The research found that each city saw a drop in the number
of black teachers in traditional and charter schools.
What policy interventions can meet the needs of
Black teachers in having successful and supported teaching experiences?
In recent conversations
with Black teachers in our network, we have heard from many people who are overwhelmed after the election.
In addition, we will contact guidance counselors, teachers, principals, and superintendents regarding the need for
more black teachers.
Black students taught by white teachers are less likely to be identified for gifted programs than black students taught
by black teachers, for example.
Taking time to acknowledge the reality of what is happening around you, especially in fellowship with
other Black teachers, can help get you through it.
Policy surrounding the nation's shortage of
black teachers tends to focus around recruitment or retention.
It is unclear whether similar patterns would emerge for black students who
experienced black teachers for multiple consecutive years.
Some of it is because we fired some people, I'll be honest with you, but we didn't just
fire black teachers, we fired teachers of all stripes.
While 17 percent of the students in K - 12 public schools are black,
black teachers make up just 8 percent of the teaching force (see Figure 1).
What happens when you
get Black teachers, parents and students in a room with no talking points, no filter, just honest conversation?
When you don't
see black teachers as talented resources, you don't make attempts to hire them.
Therefore, every young person, regardless of racial or ethnic identity, can benefit from the influence of highly
effective Black teachers in their life.
Teachers of color currently represent only 18 percent of the nation's teaching force and
black teachers comprise just 7 percent of that workforce.
There were 4 percent
fewer black teachers in American public schools in 2012 than there were in 2008.
But at the same time,
black teachers hold black students to a higher standard of behavior than do their white counterparts, the researchers found.
The community in this case was black, and those governing the schools under the experimental program
demanded black teachers and black principals.
Teachers say she has
set black teachers against whites and young teachers against veterans with her controversial 2008 contract offer.
As a result, Black students perform better with
Black teachers due to their higher expectations for their students.
That compares to 35 black students
per black teacher (about the same as for Asian students & teachers) and 63 Hispanic students per Hispanic teacher.
In addition to these education - specific challenges, the researchers found that
black teachers reported many of the same challenges that face black workers across economic sectors.
Students who have at least one
black teacher perform better on state tests, are less likely to drop out, and show a greater interest in heading to college.
But
black teachers wanted equal representation by race even though they made up a third of the teacher population.
But when black students are taught
by black teachers, the racial gap largely disappears.
The collected pieces serve as a chance to listen to the voices
of Black teachers as they offer unique perspectives and reflections on what keeps them in the classroom.
It is 61 percent white and 35 percent black, a sensitive subject among many students and parents who would prefer
more black teachers.
