Tools for Learning Schools - Each issue of this newsletter focuses on a single essential component of school improvement and features tools and resources to
use in school improvement efforts.
Released in September 2013 and updated in September 2014, this brief describes the steps that states can take to reduce chronic absence including: building public awareness, tracking and publicly reporting chronic absence rates for schools and districts, using attendance as a
metric in school improvement efforts, sharing best practices with educators and parents, and enabling interagency efforts among schools, public agencies and community groups.
Our goal was to stimulate discussion around the challenges of the past, the lessons learned from across the
country in school improvement efforts, and the exciting things to come for children in Idaho and beyond.
However, without some sort of overall quality rating for all schools, this system will remain incomplete, and fail to provide all families, educators, and other stakeholders with the information they need to
engage in school improvement efforts.
The group runs a Teaching Policy Fellowships program that involves teachers in policy formation and a Teacher Turnaround Team (T3) initiative, where teachers earn a stipend to take lead
roles in school improvement efforts.

In the end, the goal remains to build the ranks of informed and effective parents who can work within their own communities to build up other parents, play a meaningful role
in school improvement efforts and advocate for education issues with community and state leaders.
