Endogenous retroviruses are small pieces of genetic material that were once viruses but have become a natural part of our own DNA. They are remnants of ancient viral infections that infected our ancestors long ago and got integrated into their genome. These retroviruses no longer cause any harm but can still be found in our genes.

Recently, prospects for xenotransplantation brightened when Harvard geneticist George Church demonstrated the removal of dozens
of endogenous retroviruses from the pig genome, in a tour de force of the CRISPR / Cas9 gene editing technique.
The virus, called
human endogenous retrovirus W (HERV - W), codes for a protein that, when activated, sets off an inflammatory cascade in the brain that leads to symptoms.
They unearthed genomic fossils for so - called
endogenous retroviruses in highly diverse hosts, such as ray - finned fish and amphibians that had no previous link to retroviruses.
When a germ line - cell is infected there is a chance for the virus to be passed on to the host organism's offspring, and for millions of years retroviruses remotely related to HIV have colonised vertebrates, leaving traces in their genetic make - up
as endogenous retroviruses (ERV).
Of individuals with recent - onset schizophrenia, 29 % exhibited signs of a particular family of retroviruses known as Human
Endogenous Retrovirus W (HERV - W), compared with none of the control patients.
This study represents the only research done so far
on endogenous retroviruses of New World bats and suggests there is still much to be learned about vampire bats as viral reservoirs.
Finally, a 2011 study from Paprotka, et al. provided strong evidence that XMRV is a 22Rv1 - derived laboratory contaminant originating from recombination of two
mouse endogenous retroviruses during serial passage of CWR22 in nude mice [38].
On the contrary, recent evidence indicates that XMRV is a contaminant originating from the recombination of two mouse
endogenous retroviruses during passaging of a prostate tumor xenograft (CWR22) in mice, generating laboratory - derived cell lines that are XMRV - infected.
Torrey, Yolken, and Sarven Sabunciyan, an epigeneticist at Johns Hopkins, are working to understand
how endogenous retroviruses can wreak their havoc.
Sabunciyan has found that an unexpectedly large amount of the RNA produced in the brain — about 5 percent — comes from seemingly «junk» DNA, which
includes endogenous retroviruses.
Researchers at SciLifeLab now provide new knowledge about the long - term interactions of retroviruses and their hosts by
analyzing endogenous retroviruses (ERVs), retroviruses whose genes have become part of the host organism's genome.
Phylogenetic analyses place XMRV firmly within the murine endogenous retroviruses [3] even though no identical element has so far been identified within the mouse genome [4].
Removing the viruses — called
porcine endogenous retroviruses, or PERVs — creates piglets that can't pass the viruses on to transplant recipients, geneticist Luhan Yang and colleagues report online August 10 in Science.
Our DNA carries dozens of copies of Perron's virus, now called
human endogenous retrovirus W, or HERV - W, at specific addresses on chromosomes 6 and 7.
The research activities of the institute focus mainly on the HI virus which causes AIDS,
on endogenous retroviruses, which are integrated into our germline, and hepatitis B and C viruses, which cause liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
It showed close sequence similarity to xenotropic
murine endogenous retrovirus elements and was thus named xenotropic murine leukaemia virus related virus (XMRV).
Vestigial features, study of ebryonic development, biogeography, DNA sequencing, examining pseudogenes, study
of endogenous retroviruses, labratory direct examination of natural selection in action in E-Coli bacteria, lactose intolerance in humans, the peppered moth's colour change in reaction to industrial pollution, radiotrophic fungi at Chernobyl all add to the modern evolutionary synthesis.
In a milestone breakthrough, biotech eGenesis says it has successfully birthed pigs that don't carry porcine
endogenous retroviruses (PERVs).
Genetics like
Endogenous Retroviruses (ERVs), Human Chromosome - 2, etc..
Perhaps the most significant distinction between evolution and ID / creationism is evolution's ability to explain poor design features, e.g. male nip - ples, the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the presence / location of
endogenous retroviruses, and (one of my personal favorites) the presence of a defunct gene for egg yolk protein in our placental mammal genomes.
Tangible proof can be found by studying vestigial features, ebryonic development, biogeography, DNA sequencing, pseudogenes,
endogenous retroviruses, labratory direct examination of natural selection in action in E-Coli bacteria, lactose intolerance in humans, the peppered moth's colour change in reaction to industrial pollution, radiotrophic fungi at Chernobyl... all of these things add to the modern evolutionary synthesis.
Evolutionary theory has been validated in the successful prediction of a wide range of biological observations, e.g., the fused 2nd human chromosome, the phylogenetic distribution of
endogenous retroviruses, the relative positions and features of intermediate and transitional fossils, etc, etc..
That's crucial, because the memorably named infectious agents, short for porcine
endogenous retroviruses, could cause tumors, leukemia, and neuronal degeneration if transplanted into patients.
One of their goals has been to find signs of
endogenous retroviruses, viruses that invade cells and worm their way into DNA.
Now a team led by Robin Weiss of London's Institute of Cancer Research reports that the «PK» porcine
endogenous retrovirus, which does not appear to harm pigs, can replicate in mink and human cells.
Pig cells contain multiple copies of embedded viruses called porcine
endogenous retroviruses, or PERVs.
To do so, the placenta may deploy a mercenary army of
endogenous retroviruses — viral genes embedded in the mammal's DNA.
Vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) samples from Mexico and from the Berlin Zoological Garden revealed a new
endogenous retrovirus (named DrERV after Desmodus rotundus endogenous retrovirus) that is also present in rodents and primates but is absent in other closely related bat species.
The scientists first reported find was a special kind of «fossil» virus, called
an endogenous retrovirus (ERV).
Some of the first genes to start expressing themselves again are former viruses turned into transposable elements known as human
endogenous retroviruses, particularly one called HERVK, Wysocka and colleagues found.
HERVK is the youngest class of
endogenous retroviruses: They were last active as viruses within the last 200,000 years.
And in lab experiments, these porcine
endogenous retroviruses (PERVs) tended to leap from pig to human cells.
Regulatory evolution of innate immunity through co-option of
endogenous retroviruses.
Reproductive biologist Tom Spencer at Texas A & M University has found that such foreign elements of DNA, called
endogenous retroviruses, are necessary for the growth of the placenta in mammals.
The expression of enJSRV in the sheep placenta is strikingly similar to the expression of
another endogenous retrovirus, HERV - W, found in humans and primates, Spencer says.
Endogenous retroviruses, or ERVs, are not able to produce new viruses, and because of that scientists originally assumed that they were harmless genetic fossils.
Endogenous retroviruses were long considered genetic fossils, incapable of doing anything interesting.
The era of writing off
endogenous retroviruses and other seemingly inert parts of the genome as genetic fossils is drawing to an end, Perron says.
The more powerful one occurred within a stretch of DNA, or locus, that contains the HCP5 gene, which codes for a human
endogenous retrovirus — a genetic fossil of a virus that wove itself into human chromosomes long ago but no longer produces infectious progeny.
Called human
endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), the vast majority of these ancient viruses are no longer functional.
The virus is now known as
an endogenous retrovirus or ERV — a permanent fixture in the host's genome.
