Model error in representing the impact of
SST anomalies on land is also possible.
This is visible in
SST data and is very obvious once you know it's there.
But it's fairly well established that
warmer SST means more hurricanes in general, but not always.
It remained in climate literature despite obvious evidence that the majority of reported
SST measurements in 1970 were being done by buckets.
There were more shallow oceans then which allowed
higher SST's to exist.
What about the alternative hypothesis: the contribution of anthropogenic greenhouse gases to
tropical SST warming?
Indeed the use of actual
SST as input makes this a big problem.
I have found that this same relationship applies when the first difference of the global land trends are correlated to the land trend minus the
ocean SST trend.
The global mean removed here is the
mean SST averaged from 60 ° S to 60 ° N.
This study attempted to determine the relationships between solar activity and SST [sea surface temperature].
The global
SST show mostly similar trends to those of the land - surface air temperature until 1976, but the trend since 1976 is markedly less (Table 2.1).
The
local SST anomaly is about 4 C over one year.

Currently there are many
different SST data sets available derived from satellite systems.
This suggests an unusual signed positive feedback with
fixed SST, but may still be plausible.
Even things like the shape of the bottom can
affect SST.
It is the global average
SST time series we would have if history had granted us perfect observations at all points and all times, the one True time series.
We also find that changes in mean
SST alone can account for the majority of these changes, at least over the satellite record.
There are any number of intricacies in the interpretation of
SST buckets.
This would seem to eliminate the possibility that they exclusively
represent SST measurement artifacts.
